Do your numbers match? It is one of the questions I am asked most often, and for good reason. Numerology compatibility by birth date can say remarkable things about the dynamic between two people: what works, what is challenging, and why sometimes the chemistry just does not click despite all the goodwill.
In this guide I lay it all out: how relationship compatibility works in numerology, which pairs are considered harmonious, which are challenging, and what to do when the numbers do not "match."

Why check couple compatibility in numerology?
Numerology does not come to replace feelings, chemistry or truly getting to know each other. It adds a layer of understanding. Just as you would not buy an apartment without checking the foundations, in a relationship too it is worth understanding what lies beneath the surface.
Numerology compatibility reveals:
- Where the natural connection is: what draws you to each other
- Where the friction is: what may create recurring conflicts
- What the lesson is: why this relationship came into your life
- Karmic connection: whether there is a bond here that goes beyond this lifetime
How to find your compatibility by birth date
The basis of couple compatibility in numerology is the destiny number (life path) of each partner, derived from the full date of birth. In the Kabbalistic method you add up all the digits of the date, and the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 stay as they are and are read on their own. If you want the step-by-step method, read how to calculate your numbers, or let the calculator work out both destiny numbers for you.
Take an example couple: she has destiny number 4, he has destiny number 8. According to the compatibility table below, 4 and 8 are on each other's natural-match list. Both belong to the physical family, both are builders, both love a plan, both value stability. That does not mean they will never argue, but they pull in the same direction.
When you compare two destiny numbers, you get one of three pictures:
- Natural match: couples whose energy flows naturally
- Challenge: couples who need to work harder on harmony
- Neutral: neither easy nor hard, depending on the work you do together
What we look at beyond the destiny number
The destiny number is the foundation, but a full numerology compatibility reading looks at several more layers:
1. The relationship block
Each of us comes with a relationship block, a pattern that blocks the ability to form a deep bond. When you understand the block of both partners, you can work with it instead of fighting it.
2. The love magnet
A number that reveals what attracts you in a relationship, and what attracts your partner. When the magnets complement each other, the chemistry is strong. When they oppose each other, awareness is needed.
3. The energetic code
The energetic code reveals a talent and information from a previous incarnation. Sometimes an especially strong bond is related to a karmic connection: souls who met before and chose to meet again.
4. The sexual interaction
Yes, there is a number for that too. The sexual interaction reveals the intimate dynamic between the partners, what each one needs and how it fits with the other.
5. The name and the personal year
Name compatibility checks the frequency of both partners' names, and each partner's personal year shows whether you are in matching energies right now. Two people in opposite years, for example one in a year 1 of beginnings and the other in a year 9 of endings, will feel out of sync even when everything is fine.
All of these numbers are calculated automatically at hilel.link.
Compatibility table for destiny numbers 1-9
According to Shira's book, compatibility is determined by the number families. There are three families: the emotional family (3, 6, 9), the physical family (2, 4, 8, 11, 22) and the rational family (1, 5, 7). We are usually drawn to members of our own family and feel harmony with them: it feels familiar, heavenly and strong. Numbers from different families bring different values, and that is where more work is needed.
Even a couple from the same family needs to watch the family's shared weakness: two rational numbers may live like two soloists, two physical numbers may become fixed and fear change, and two emotional numbers may give without limits and get swept into drama. The master numbers 11 and 22 belong to the physical family: here 11 is read like 2, and 22 like 4.
The table is read from the point of view of the number in the row: whom it flows with naturally, whom it is neutral with, and whom it needs to work with. Notice that sometimes one side feels the friction more than the other, and that is information too. The calculator checks both directions. An identical number, like 1 with 1, always belongs to the same family.
| Destiny number | Natural match | Neutral | Challenging | |---|---|---|---| | 1, leadership and independence | 1, 5, 7 | 2, 3, 4, 6, 9 | 8 | | 2, partnership and balance | 2, 4, 8 | 3, 6, 7, 9 | 1, 5 | | 3, creativity and expression | 3, 6, 9 | 1, 2, 5, 8 | 4, 7 | | 4, stability and building | 2, 4, 8 | 1, 6, 7, 9 | 3, 5 | | 5, freedom and change | 1, 5, 7 | 3, 6, 8, 9 | 2, 4 | | 6, responsibility and love | 3, 6, 9 | 2, 4, 7, 8 | 1, 5 | | 7, wisdom and spirituality | 1, 5, 7 | 2, 4, 6, 9 | 3, 8 | | 8, power and abundance | 2, 4, 8 | 3, 5, 6, 9 | 1, 7 | | 9, universality and compassion | 3, 6, 9 | 1, 2, 5, 7 | 4, 8 |

Numbers that challenge each other
A few combinations come up again and again in my couple sessions. They are not "bad"; they simply connect two different number families, and so they call for awareness:
- 1 with 8: two people used to leading. The argument is not about what is right but about who decides. What helps: a clear division of areas, each one leads somewhere else.
- 4 with 5, and 2 with 5: the need for stability meets the need for freedom. One wants a plan, the other wants spontaneity. What helps: agree in advance on one fixed "anchor," and leave the rest open.
- 3 with 7: sociability and light versus depth and quiet. One wants to go out, the other wants to stay in. What helps: do not read the quiet as rejection, and do not read the noise as shallowness.
- 7 with 8: spirit versus matter. One measures success in money, the other in meaning. What helps: understand that both serve the home, each in its own way.
- 6 with 1, and 6 with 5: the heart that wants to care meets someone who needs space. 6 feels unappreciated, 1 or 5 feel smothered. What helps: ask for closeness in words instead of through worry.
- 4 with 9, and 8 with 9: practice versus vision, accumulating versus giving. What helps: give 9 the meaning and 4 or 8 the plan, and remember that both need each other.
The relationship block: why the same fight keeps coming back
If you have one argument that has been returning in different wording for years, it is probably not about the dishes in the sink. It is about the relationship block, a personal pattern each of you brings into the relationship that has nothing to do with your current partner. It may have been there in the previous relationship too.
The great value of the calculation is to give the block a name. Once it has a name, the argument stops being personal: it is no longer "you always" or "you never," but a pattern you can look at together.
Karmic connection in relationships
Sometimes couples feel an immediate, deep bond, as if they have always known each other. In numerology this can point to a karmic connection: souls who met in previous incarnations and chose to continue the journey together.
The energetic code, which reveals information about a previous incarnation, can expose such connections. When both partners have complementary energetic codes, it is a sign of a deep bond that goes beyond this lifetime. A karmic connection is not necessarily an easy one; sometimes it is exactly the one that brings the greatest lesson.
Remember: there is no "impossible" match
Every couple can work. Every combination of numbers can create a happy relationship. The question is how much work is needed. A couple with a natural match will flow more easily. A couple with a challenge will need to work on communication, mutual understanding and compromise.
But sometimes the strongest relationships are exactly the ones that went through the challenge, because those who work on the relationship build something that does not break.
What to do when your compatibility is low
First of all, breathe. A low score is not a verdict. It says that awareness is needed in a particular place, not that the relationship does not work. I have seen couples with a "challenge" on paper who built a stable home, and couples with a high match who took the relationship for granted until it wore down.
What is worth doing:
- Pinpoint the exact friction. Not "we are not compatible," but "I need a plan and he needs freedom." Once the friction is focused, you can talk about it.
- Check the blocks, not only the destiny numbers. Sometimes the destiny numbers are challenging but the relationship blocks actually complement each other, and the gap closes.
- Check the timing. If one of you is in a stormy personal year, it is hard to know what belongs to the relationship and what belongs to the year. Hold off on big conclusions.
- Decide for yourselves. The numbers invite you to look. The choice, whether to stay, to work on it or to leave, is always yours.
How to use numerology in your relationship, step by step
1. Calculate both of your maps in the numerology calculator. 2. Compare your destiny numbers using the table above. 3. Check the relationship blocks of both of you, not only yours. 4. Read the interpretations: the calculator gives detailed explanations for each number. 5. Check the timing before big decisions: moving house, a wedding, a child. 6. If you want to go deeper, a personal couples consultation with Shira Hilel can break down every number and join all the layers into one picture. You can also order Shira's couple map by email.
Frequently asked questions
How do you check couple compatibility in numerology?
The basis is comparing the destiny numbers of both partners, derived from the full date of birth, according to the compatibility table. A full analysis also looks at the relationship block, the love magnet, the energetic code, the name and each partner's personal year. The calculator at hilel.link does all of this automatically.
Which destiny numbers are especially compatible?
According to Shira's book, a natural match is between members of the same number family: 1, 5 and 7 (the rational family); 2, 4 and 8, as well as 11 and 22 (the physical family); 3, 6 and 9 (the emotional family). In these combinations both partners share values and pull in the same direction, and it feels familiar and strong. Still, each family has a shared point of growth, and a high match is an invitation to invest, not a promise.
What if our compatibility is low?
Low compatibility is not a verdict. It points to a specific point of friction that calls for awareness, for example a need for stability versus a need for freedom. Pinpoint the exact friction, check your relationship blocks and both personal years, and decide for yourselves what is right for you. Many couples with a challenge on paper build a stable bond precisely thanks to the work they do together.
Can numerology compatibility predict whether a relationship will succeed?
No. Numerology does not predict the future or promise an outcome; it shows energetic patterns. It can reveal natural connections and possible challenges, and in that way allow more awareness and better communication. The success of the relationship depends on the choices and the work of both of you, not on the numbers.
