There is something magical about a name. When someone calls you by your name, it is not just a sound in the air. It is a vibration. It is energy. And once you understand name numerology, you begin to see how precise the connection is between the name you were given and who you really are.
In Hebrew, every letter has a numerical value: this is gematria. When you calculate the numerological value of a name, you get a number that reveals whole layers of personality, talents and even challenges.

How name numerology works in Hebrew
Unlike other languages, Hebrew has a direct connection between letters and numbers. This is no coincidence: it is a tradition thousands of years old called gematria. Shira Hilel works with Kabbalistic numerology, which reads your name in its Hebrew letters. (How this compares with reading a name in Latin letters is explained in Kabbalistic vs Western numerology.)
Every letter has its own value
Every Hebrew letter carries a fixed numerical value. From the letters of the name comes its gematria value, and from that comes the numerological number that reveals the energy the name carries.

Examples of names and their numbers
Every name has a numerological number that reveals its energy:
- The name Shira (Shin = 3, Yod = 1, Resh = 2, He = 5) comes to 11, and in a name you keep reducing: 1 + 1 = 2. The tool this name gives is bridging, sensitivity, an intuition that does not mislead, and a talent for connecting people. Fitting, isn't it?
- The name David carries the number 5: freedom, change, adventure and movement. King David certainly lived a life full of changes and adventures.

What each number says about your name
Number 1: a name of leadership and independence
If your name reduces to 1, it holds the energy of personal power, initiative and a pioneering spirit. People with a name number 1 tend to stand at the front and open new paths. They are natural sources of inspiration.
Challenge: balancing independence with cooperation.
Number 2: a name of partnership and balance
A name that reduces to 2 carries the energy of high sensitivity, strong intuition and diplomacy. People with a name number 2 are born to create connections and to bridge between people.
Challenge: not losing yourself in other people's needs.
Number 3: a name of creativity and self-expression
A gift for expression, natural charisma, a rich imagination and optimism are all hidden in a name number 3. People with this name are born to express themselves and lift others up.
Challenge: staying focused instead of scattering energy in many directions.
Number 4: a name of stability and building
A name that reduces to 4 points to order, discipline, reliability and patience. People with a name number 4 build strong foundations that last.
Challenge: not becoming too rigid, and leaving room for flexibility.
Number 5: a name of freedom and change
The energy of renewal, adventure and variety. People with a name number 5 are gifted with communication and persuasion, and know how to handle change. They are charismatic and draw people to them.
Challenge: finding stability within change.
Number 6: a name of responsibility and love
A big heart, an eye for beauty and deep care. A name number 6 points to someone born to create balance and calm in the family and the community.
Challenge: not forgetting yourself while caring for others.
Number 7: a name of holiness, wisdom and spirituality
Strong spirituality, sharp thinking and an excellent investigative mind. A name number 7 speaks of the victory of spirit over matter, drawn to everything hidden from the eye.
Challenge: shyness, and a self-confidence that builds slowly.
Number 8: a name of power and abundance
Management ability, a sharp business vision and ambition. A name number 8 carries the energy of financial success and influence. Born to lead businesses and attract abundance.
Challenge: balancing the material and the spiritual worlds.
Number 9: a name of universality and compassion
A broad view, deep wisdom and unconditional giving. A name number 9 points to someone who leaves a deep mark on the world, with the ability to influence many.
Challenge: not holding on to things that have already finished their role.
What if the name comes to 11, 22 or 33?
In the first name and the full name there are no master numbers. You keep reducing to a single digit between 1 and 9: 11 becomes 2, 22 becomes 4 and 33 becomes 6. For example, the name Shira Hilel: Shira is 11, Hilel is 11, together 22, and from there 2 + 2 = 4. Master numbers are kept only in the Destiny number, which is calculated from the date of birth (see how to calculate your life path number and master number 11).
First name vs full name
It is important to know that there is a difference between your first name and your full name:
- Your first name gives you more tools that help you fulfill your purpose.
- Your full name (first name plus surname, as written on your ID) is the strongest tool for fulfilling your purpose, which is why it is also called the "secondary Destiny number".
It is worth calculating both and seeing what comes up. Both appear as layers of your soul map.
Do vowel marks change the calculation?
A question that comes up a lot: do the Hebrew vowel marks (nikud) change the calculation? In the accepted numerological approach in Hebrew, you count only the letters themselves, without the vowel marks. The letters are the body, the vowel marks are the soul, and in gematria we measure the body.
Why is my name so accurate?
Numerology says that your parents did not choose your name: your name chose you. On a soul level, before you were born, a name was chosen for you that fits your purpose in this lifetime. That is why so many people discover that the meaning of their name is remarkably accurate.
