Numerology for Beginners: What It Is and How to Start

If you have heard about numerology and never quite understood what it is, or if you sense there is something in numbers but have no idea where to begin, this guide to numerology for beginners is for you.

Numerology is not magic. It is not an exact science either. It is a language: a language of numbers that helps you understand yourself, the people around you and the reality you live in, on a deeper level.

What is numerology?

Numerology is an ancient body of knowledge that gives meaning to numbers. The core idea is simple: everything in the universe can be translated into numbers, whether it is a name, a date of birth or an address, and every number carries its own energy and meaning.

Unlike astrology, which relies on the position of the stars, numerology relies on numbers. That is exactly what makes it so accessible. Anyone can work out their numbers and get immediate answers about themselves.

A short history

Numerology is not a new invention. It has existed in different forms for thousands of years:

  • Babylon and ancient Egypt used numbers for prediction and ritual.
  • The Hebrew letters: in Hebrew every letter is also a number, and the Book of Formation (Sefer Yetzirah) describes the creation of the world through 22 letters and 10 sefirot.
  • Jewish Kabbalah: Hebrew gematria is an independent and deep numerical system that links letters to numbers.
  • The modern era: numerology returned to public awareness in the 20th century and has only kept growing since.

The method Shira Hilel works with is Kabbalistic numerology, which reads names through the Hebrew letters and draws on gematria. You can read more about how it compares to the approach found in most English books in Kabbalistic vs Western numerology.

The basic numbers: 1 to 9

In numerology, every compound number is eventually reduced to a single digit between 1 and 9 (except for master numbers). Here is a short overview.

1: The leader

Personal power, initiative, a pioneering spirit, determination and originality. A 1 is born to lead and to open a new path. The challenge: balancing independence with cooperation.

2: The diplomat

High sensitivity, strong intuition, diplomacy and the ability to listen. A 2 is born to create connections and to build bridges. The challenge: not losing yourself inside other people's needs.

3: The creator

A gift for expression, natural charisma, a rich imagination, optimism and joy. A 3 is born to express itself and to lift others up. The challenge: staying focused instead of scattering.

4: The builder

Order, discipline, reliability, patience and loyalty. A 4 is born to organize, plan and lay strong foundations. The challenge: not becoming too rigid.

5: The adventurer

Renewal, adventure, variety and quick adaptation. A 5 is born to experience life to the fullest. The challenge: finding stability within change.

6: The caregiver

A big heart, an eye for beauty, care and balance. A 6 is born to create harmony in the family and the community. The challenge: not forgetting yourself.

7: The seeker

Strong spirituality, sharp thinking, an excellent investigative mind and a striving for perfection. A 7 is born to explore what is hidden. The challenge: shyness and a lack of self-confidence.

8: The person of abundance

Management ability, a sharp business vision and ambition. An 8 is born to attract abundance and to lead. The challenge: balancing the material and the spiritual.

9: The humanist

A broad view, deep wisdom and unconditional giving. A 9 is born to influence the world and to serve humanity. The challenge: letting go of what no longer serves.

Master numbers: 11, 22, 33

Master numbers are double numbers that are not reduced in the Destiny number (in the first name and the full name they are reduced to a single digit, 1 to 9). They carry heightened energy and a special purpose:

  • 11: high spiritual inspiration. Double intuition, extreme sensitivity, a capacity for illumination. A channel for knowledge from higher sources.
  • 22: the builder of great dreams. Vision plus practical ability. Reaches key positions, determined and focused.
  • 33: the spiritual teacher and healer. A rare ability to touch souls, unconditional love. The highest number.

Each of them has its own article: master number 11, master number 22 and master number 33.

The main numbers in a numerology chart

Numerology is not about one number only. There are several main numbers, and together they form your soul map.

The Destiny number (Life path)

Calculated from your date of birth. This is the most important number: it reveals your purpose. You can learn the rule step by step in how to calculate your life path number.

The name number

Calculated from the gematria of your Hebrew name, and always reduced to a single digit, 1 to 9. Your name is the tool you have for fulfilling your purpose, and your full name is the main tool. More on this in name numerology.

The personal year

Derived from your date of birth, and it changes every year on your birthday, not on January 1. It shows the energy of your year.

The personal day

Calculated anew every day: the energy of this particular day for you.

How to get started with numerology

Step 1: Find your Destiny number

Your Destiny number comes from your date of birth, and it is the first and most important step. Shira's calculator gives it to you in 30 seconds, as a free peek, at the numerology calculator. And if one day you want to calculate all the numbers yourself, step by step, Shira teaches the full method in her course, Bereshit HaMispharim (The Genesis of Numbers).

Step 2: Read about your number

Understand its traits, its challenges, the careers that suit it and its compatibility in relationships. Start with your number: life path 1, life path 2, life path 3, life path 4, life path 5, life path 6, life path 7, life path 8 or life path 9.

Step 3: Discover your name number

Your name number comes from the gematria of your Hebrew name. The calculator works it out for you in seconds as well, with no tables needed.

Step 4: Compare

Look at how your Destiny number and your name number relate. Harmony? Tension? There are usually interesting insights either way.

Step 5: Go deeper

Check your personal year, your personal day and your relationship compatibility (see the couple match guide). Every layer adds depth.

What numerology is not

  • It is not a science. It is an intuitive body of knowledge.
  • It is not fortune telling. It reveals energies and tendencies, not specific events.
  • It is not a religion. You can use it regardless of religious belief.
  • It is not a verdict. The numbers suggest, you decide.

What numerology is

  • A mirror. A way to see yourself differently.
  • A language. A way to communicate with yourself and with the world.
  • A map. Not the territory, a map. It shows possibilities, it does not decree fate.
  • A tool for empowerment. When you understand your energy, you can work with it rather than against it.
